Where to stay in Europe

One continent, many different ideas of a good holiday.

Europe makes the region question unavoidable: a fast train can turn two cities into one trip, and a short flight can do the same across borders. Choose the cities first, then let the route choose the countries. From there, the city guides narrow things down to the quarter you actually sleep in.

Regional notes

What changes as you cross the region.

Europe · 11 country hubs

01

Train time is not door-to-door time

A city pair that looks close on a map can still take half a day once you count the station walk, the platform wait and the check-in at the other end. Count door to door, and do not book a museum for the same afternoon you change cities.

02

Check Sunday and Monday hours

Many neighbourhood restaurants and small shops keep shorter hours or close on Sunday or Monday. Check the specific address before you build a day around it; central landmarks usually stay open, but the places you came for may not.

03

Read the room, not the star rating

Room size, bed size and lift access tell you more about a two-person stay than the star rating. Older buildings can be charming and cramped at the same time. If luggage space matters, ask before you book.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
