Where to stay in the Netherlands

A small, flat country where the bicycle is the local language.

The Netherlands is compact and easy to cross by train, with towns close enough for day trips from Amsterdam. The bicycle is not a tourist attraction but the main transport system: learn the rules before you rent one, and never walk in a bike lane. Museums and popular sights reward booking ahead, and the weather changes quickly in every season.

01

Learn the bike-lane rules

Bike lanes are for bikes, not for walking or standing. Look both ways before crossing, walk on the pavement, and if you rent a bike, follow the flow and signal clearly.

02

Book museums ahead

The most popular museums and the Anne Frank House use timed slots and sell out. Reserve before your trip rather than hoping for a walk-in, especially in summer.

03

Carry a rain layer

Rain arrives quickly and sideways, even in summer. A light waterproof jacket is more useful than an umbrella in the wind, and locals rarely let rain change their plans.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
