Where to stay in North America

A continent where the city grid decides your day more than the guidebook does.

North American cities reward choosing the base before the itinerary. Downtown can mean an office district that empties at six, while a neighbourhood two stops away holds the food and the evening. These guides compare that trade-off by cost, transit time, noise and the walk at either end — not by how central an address looks on a map.

01

Downtown is not always the evening

In cities shaped around office districts, a downtown address can be quiet after six and far from the food you came for. Look at what stays open around each base in the evening, not just how central it looks in the day.

02

Count the transfers

A 20-minute ride with one easy transfer often beats a 12-minute ride from a stop you can only reach through a long walk. Read the walk at both ends of the journey, especially at night.

03

Read the total, not the headline rate

Hotel taxes, destination fees and tipping can sit outside the number you first saw. Budget for the extras, and treat every nightly range on this site as a sample estimate rather than a live quote.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
