Where to stay in Türkiye

Two continents, ferries and a food culture that spans the day.

Istanbul is a city to cross by water. Ferries connect the historic peninsula, the Asian side and the Bosphorus villages, and the best days include at least one crossing. It is large and hilly, with traffic that can swallow an afternoon, so choose a base and stay near it. Food is excellent at every price, from breakfast spreads to street simit, and the tourist areas are only a small part of the city.

01

Buy an Istanbulkart

A single contactless transit card works on trams, metro, buses and ferries, and one card can be topped up for a group. It saves queueing and is cheaper than single rides.

02

Allow for traffic

Cross-city trips can take far longer than the map suggests. Group sights by side of the water, use the ferry instead of the bridge when possible, and do not schedule tight connections.

03

Carry cash for small shops

Cards are widely accepted, but small tea houses, market stalls and some taxis may prefer cash. Keep a modest amount and agree on the fare before getting into a taxi.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
