Where to stay in Oceania

Space is the luxury. The right base saves you an hour of commuting a day.

Oceania's cities can look compact on a map and behave like a sprawl in practice. Beaches, airport and centre are often three different directions, and public transport thins out after the evening peak. Decide which one you will use most, choose a base that serves it, and treat every other trip as a planned excursion rather than a casual detour.

01

Add the walk to the ride

A 25-minute train can still be a 45-minute door-to-door trip once you count the walk at each end. Read the whole journey, and check how often the service actually runs, especially on Sundays and public holidays.

02

Respect the sun and the water

UV levels here are high even on cloudy days, and surf and currents are not a metaphor. Use sunscreen, swim near lifeguards where they are present, and follow local beach warnings rather than your own read of the waves.

03

Book the peak, loosen the rest

The summer holidays and major events fill hotels and raise rates well ahead of time. Reserve the nights that matter, then leave room for weather changes and slow mornings instead of packing every day with a fixed booking.

Tell me the cities you’re weighing and how you like to travel. I’ll answer with a specific neighbourhood, not a list.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
