Where to stay in the United Kingdom

A small country with very different cities. London is its own planet.

London is easier than its reputation and larger than you think. Choose a base that matches your plan instead of trying to be central to everything: one neighbourhood, one easy commute, one good local pub. Outside London, the same rule applies — a town centre beats a cheap hotel on a ring road every time.

City guides in the United Kingdom

One city, deeply mapped — more are being researched.

Before you book

The country-level things that change the stay.

01

Use contactless, not paper tickets

Contactless cards and phones work across the Tube, buses and most trains, with a daily cap. Use the same card all day and avoid the ticket-machine queue.

02

Book the big things first

West End theatres, popular restaurants and museum time slots are easier to plan around than to improvise. Leave the rest of the day loose.

03

Watch your phone near the kerb

Phone theft by people on bikes is a common city crime, particularly near busy stations and tourist areas. Step away from the curb to check directions.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
