Where to stay in Czechia

A compact old city, serious beer and a growing food scene.

Prague is one of the easiest first cities in Central Europe: compact, walkable and full of preserved architecture. Go early or late to the famous sites, and spend the middle of the day in neighbourhoods rather than on the main tourist routes. Beer is cheaper than water in some places, but the city also has excellent coffee and a serious contemporary food scene if you look beyond the square.

01

Use official currency exchanges

Some tourist-area exchange offices offer poor rates or heavy commissions. Use a bank ATM or a clearly priced exchange office, and decline the conversion when a card terminal offers it.

02

Validate your tram ticket

Buy a timed ticket and stamp it in the yellow machine on first boarding. Inspectors work the trams regularly and fines are not small.

03

Visit the famous sights early

The Charles Bridge and the castle square are calmest before 9am and after the day-trippers leave. Plan the crowded places for the edges of the day and the neighbourhoods for the middle.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
