Where to stay in France

A country of villages, but Paris is best treated like a set of villages too.

France rewards slowing down, but Paris rewards getting the arrondissement right. The city is compact enough that a 20-minute walk changes the mood entirely. Pick a base for the kind of days you want — museum-heavy, market-led, romantic, family-paced — and expect small rooms, plenty of stairs and food worth planning around.

The country-level things that change the stay.

01

Learn two metro lines

Line 1 and the RER B will cover most first trips. Line 1 runs through the centre; the RER B links CDG, Gare du Nord and Luxembourg. A single change is usually enough.

02

Check Sunday and Monday hours

The Marais is one of the few areas that stays open on Sunday; many neighbourhood restaurants close Sunday or Monday. Check before you build a day around one address.

03

Budget the city tax

The taxe de séjour is charged per person per night and is not always in the displayed rate. It is small, but it adds up for a family or a long stay.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
