Where to stay in Germany

Big, affordable cities with hard-edged creativity and a serious café culture.

Germany's cities are easy to use and often better value than their reputations suggest. Trains and local transport are reliable, museums are excellent, and the food scene has moved well beyond stereotypes. Berlin is the obvious first stop for many visitors, but other cities reward the trip; expect cash to be more welcome than in other rich countries, and shops to close on Sundays.

The country-level things that change the stay.

01

Carry some cash

Card acceptance is growing, but some bakeries, small bars and market stalls still take only cash. Carry a modest amount and use a card for larger purchases.

02

Plan around Sunday

Most shops close on Sunday, though restaurants, museums and transport keep going. Buy groceries and essentials on Saturday, and use Sunday for parks, museums or a day trip.

03

Validate your ticket

Some local transport tickets need validating before travel, and inspectors are common. Look for the stamping machine on the platform and ask if unsure.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
