Where to stay in Greece

Ancient stone, long lunches and a ferry map that rewards patience.

Greece works best when you resist the temptation to collect islands. Athens deserves two or three nights for the Acropolis, its neighbourhoods and its food, then one or two islands with enough time to slow down. Ferries are weather-dependent, summer heat is serious, and the best meals are often far from the caldera view. Book the first and last nights near your transport, not at the prettiest address.

One city, deeply mapped — more are being researched.

The country-level things that change the stay.

01

Start the Acropolis early

The Acropolis and nearby sites get hot and crowded by mid-morning. Take the first sensible entry slot, carry water and wear shoes with grip; the marble is slippery.

02

Keep ferry days flexible

Island ferries can be delayed or cancelled by wind. Do not book a flight home on the same day as a ferry, and keep one buffer night near Athens or the port before departure.

03

Shift dinner later

Athenians eat late, especially in summer. A 9pm dinner is normal, and tavernas in residential neighbourhoods are often better value than those facing the Acropolis.

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
