Where to stay in Italy

Ancient streets, regional kitchens and a country that rewards slowing down.

Italy is not one destination but many, and the best trips pick fewer places than they first plan. Trains connect the main cities well, but each city deserves at least two nights and a full day without a train. Eat where the menu is short and seasonal, expect coffee to be drunk standing at the bar, and check whether the kitchen closes in the afternoon.

01

Validate regional tickets

Many regional train and bus tickets need to be validated in a machine before boarding. Rules vary, so look for the stamping machine and ask if unsure — inspectors do fine on the spot.

02

Expect a coperto

Many restaurants add a small per-person cover charge for bread and service. It is normal and not a scam; tip only if you want to reward good service.

03

Check the afternoon hours

Small shops and some kitchens close in the early afternoon. Plan lunch before the shops shut and dinner after they reopen, rather than expecting all-day service.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
