Where to stay in Africa

Cities with enormous character — and a base choice that shapes safety and time.

The African cities in this collection are not interchangeable, and neither are their neighbourhoods. A walkable, well-lit base near the places you came for is usually worth more than a cheaper room that requires a car every evening. Read the honest downsides, plan airport transfers in advance, and build in slack for heat, traffic and the slower pace of a city finding its rhythm.

01

Arrange the arrival transfer

After a long flight, the easiest mistake is improvising transport. Book a transfer through your hotel or a reputable operator, confirm the meeting point, and keep the confirmation available offline. It is one of the few places where paying a little more is clearly worth it.

02

Ask about power and water

Interruptions happen in some cities, and good hotels plan for them. If reliable power or hot water matters to you, ask directly whether the property has a backup and how it handles outages rather than assuming silence means everything is guaranteed.

03

Read the season you are in

Heat, wind and rain can change which neighbourhood works and what time of day you move. Build the day around the local pattern — early starts and long midday breaks in hot months, a windproof jacket in Cape Town's summer — instead of applying a template from another continent.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
