Where to stay in Austria

Imperial squares, coffee houses and mountains within a day of the capital.

Austria is compact and exceptionally easy to travel by train. Vienna rewards a slow few days of museums, coffee houses and long walks through the inner districts, while Salzburg and the Alps suit a second stop. Book concert and museum slots ahead in peak season, expect many shops to close on Sunday, and leave room for the afternoon coffee ritual rather than treating it as a quick stop.

The country-level things that change the stay.

01

Validate before you ride

Vienna's metro, trams and buses use the same ticket system, and inspectors do check. Buy a ticket before boarding and validate it if required; a multi-day pass is usually simpler than single tickets.

02

Plan for Sunday closures

Most shops and many smaller restaurants close on Sunday. Museums, cafés and transport run normally, so make Sunday a museum or park day and buy groceries on Saturday.

03

Book the big sights

Schönbrunn, the Belvedere and major concerts use timed entry and sell out in high season. Reserve the fixed-time items and keep the rest of the day loose for coffee and wandering.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
