January in Rio de Janeiro
Ipanema and Leblon are the most comfortable and safest-feeling base, with the best beach life and easy access to Leblon's restaurants, at the highest prices. Copacabana is cheaper and more varied, with the famous beach on the doorstep but more street noise and a greater need for care. Botafogo and Santa Teresa are the city's characterful, local side: Botafogo is practical and close to the metro, Santa Teresa is charming but hilly and quiet at night.
