Ipanema & Leblon

Beach chairs, kiosks and the best-dressed crowd in Rio.

Ipanema and Leblon are the south zone's most polished neighbourhoods, with the two best city beaches, excellent restaurants and a walkable street life that continues into the evening. Ipanema is busier and more social, Leblon quieter and more residential. They are the easiest base for a first visit if budget allows: the metro reaches both, restaurants are close, and the streets feel safer than much of the city. Prices reflect that.

What works

  • Two of the best city beaches
  • Excellent restaurants and cafés
  • Metro access and a safe-feeling street life

What doesn’t

  • The most expensive area
  • Beach theft still happens
  • Traffic to and from the centre

One local move

Claim a kiosk spot in the morning and stay for lunch; the beach is a full day, not a quick stop. For a quieter swim, walk toward Leblon's end or Arpoador for sunset.

Getting around

Metro stations at Ipanema/General Osório and Jardim de Alah connect to Copacabana, Botafogo and the centre. The beach is a two-minute walk from most hotels; use rideshares at night.

Safety

Comfortable by day, but do not leave phones, bags or jewellery unattended on the sand, and avoid walking the beach at night. Use licensed beach vendors and keep your key and a little cash on you.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Bar Veloso

    Boteco

A classic corner bar for caipirinhas and empadas; cheap, busy and an excellent place to start a night out.

  2. Sushi Leblon

    Japanese-Brazilian

A Rio institution for sushi with Brazilian ingredients; expensive, popular and best booked ahead.

  3. Garota de Ipanema

    Bar & snacks

The bar that inspired the song; touristy and musical, but a fun, affordable stop for a beer and a snack.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
