Copacabana

The famous curve of sand, and a busy street city behind it.

Copacabana is the Rio of postcards: a four-kilometre curve of beach backed by hotels, bars and a constant street life. It is cheaper than Ipanema and has more hotel choice, including the historic Copacabana Palace. It is also noisier, more crowded and more mixed, with pickpocketing and beach theft more common. Staying here puts the beach and metro within minutes, but you need to be more careful than in Leblon.

What works

  • The iconic beach on the doorstep
  • Metro along the whole neighbourhood
  • More hotel choice at lower prices

What doesn’t

  • Crowded and noisy
  • Higher risk of theft
  • Fewer quiet streets

One local move

Swim in the mornings and walk the promenade early; the beach gets crowded and the sun is intense by midday. Eat at a boteco a block back from the beach for better food and lower prices.

Getting around

Metro Line 1 runs along the neighbourhood with stations at Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo. The beach is immediately west; use the metro for Ipanema and Botafogo rather than walking at night.

Safety

Take more care here than in Ipanema. Do not take phones or jewellery to the beach, avoid the sand after dark, and keep bags zipped on the promenade. The streets immediately behind the beach are busy but attract pickpockets.

The shortlist

4 picks in Copacabana

One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.

Luxury$450–$990

Copacabana Palace

The city's grande dame, a 1920s landmark on the beach with a famous pool; formal, historic and still the address in Rio.

Mid-range$115–$235

Windsor Excelsior

A comfortable, well-located hotel with a rooftop pool and sea-view rooms; a reliable mid-range choice on the Copacabana front.

Budget$20–$65

Che Lagarto Copacabana

A lively hostel two blocks from the beach; dorms and private rooms, with a bar and a young crowd.

Unique$360–$720

Hotel Emiliano Rio

A sleek design hotel on the Atlântica with a rooftop pool and a strong Brazilian identity; contemporary, quiet and expensive.

Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Cervantes

    Sandwiches & beer

A Copacabana institution for roast-beef sandwiches with pineapple and garlic; cheap, busy and open late.

  2. Apolo 11

    Boteco

A historic bar crowded with locals for beer and petiscos; not fancy, and all the better for it.

  3. Boteco Belmonte

    Brazilian

A reliable boteco chain known for bolinhos and cold beer; a good, unpretentious lunch near the beach.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
