The Medina

Souks, courtyard riads and the square at dusk.

The Medina is Marrakech's walled old city: a dense maze of souks, workshops, riads and squares, centred on the Jemaa el-Fna and the Koutoubia mosque. Staying in a riad here is the most atmospheric option, with courtyards, roof terraces and quiet rooms behind heavy doors. It is also the hardest place to navigate, with no cars in many lanes, persistent touts and real noise around the main squares. Inside a riad, the city disappears.

What works

  • The most atmospheric place to stay
  • Souks and the square on foot
  • Quiet courtyards behind the noise

What doesn’t

  • Hard to navigate with luggage
  • Persistent touts and noise
  • Cars cannot reach many riads

One local move

Hire a licensed guide for the first morning only, then explore alone. Learn the route from your riad to one landmark and use that as an anchor; do not try to memorise the whole medina.

Getting around

The medina is walking-only in most lanes. Use a riad-arranged transfer from the airport, and a registered taxi or app from the nearest gate for longer trips. Do not try to drive into the medina.

Safety

Safe by day, with high levels of petty scamming. Do not follow people who offer directions or a tour, keep bags zipped, and avoid the quiet outer lanes after dark. Agree on any taxi price before the door closes.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
