Where to stay in Morocco

Medinas, mountains and food scented with cumin and orange blossom.

Morocco is close to Europe and feels genuinely different. Marrakech is the obvious entry point, with the medina, the Atlas Mountains and the desert within reach, but Fes, Essaouira and Chefchaouen reward a longer route. Bargaining is normal in the souks, hospitality is generous, and the difference between a good trip and a tiring one is often how firmly you say no to unsolicited guides.

01

Agree prices before you start

Taxis, guides and market purchases should have a price agreed upfront. Use a licensed guide if you want a tour, and do not follow people who approach you on the street offering directions.

02

Bargain with good humour

Prices in the souks are negotiable, but not everything is a competition. Decide what an item is worth to you, smile, and walk away if it does not suit; being rude or too aggressive spoils the experience.

03

Dress for the season and the place

Light, loose clothing covering shoulders and knees is comfortable and respectful. Summer is very hot, winter evenings are cold, and the mountains need another layer entirely.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
