Guéliz

Cafés, galleries and a normal city that happens to be next to a medina.

Guéliz is the modern city built during the French protectorate: wide streets, cafés, galleries, boutiques and ordinary apartment blocks. It is where residents shop, work and eat, and it offers the best value and the least hassle in Marrakech. It is not romantic, and it is a 20-minute walk or short taxi to the medina, but it is a useful, comfortable base with real street life.

What works

  • The best value for money
  • Cafés and restaurants for locals
  • Easy taxi rides to the medina

What doesn’t

  • No historic atmosphere
  • A walk or ride from the sights
  • Traffic on the main avenues

One local move

Breakfast at a local café and lunch at a women-run restaurant; then take a taxi into the medina for the evening. It is a better food strategy than eating every meal on the square.

Getting around

Guéliz is walkable within itself, and taxis to the medina are short and cheap. There is no useful train; use taxis or rideshares for the medina, Hivernage and the airport.

Safety

Quieter and more ordinary than the medina, generally safe by day. Use the same precautions at night, and avoid empty streets near the station.

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
