June in London

Soho is the first-timer's no-brainer: theatres, food and everything walkable. Shoreditch is where design, coffee and late nights live, with faster access to the City. South Bank is the family pick: river, museums and no need for the Tube. Kensington is calm, polished and the easiest Heathrow base.

The season

Summer

School holidays and long evenings usually make summer the busiest stretch, especially around the headline sights. The parks are at their most social, but popular neighbourhoods can feel crowded by midday. Book ahead and keep an indoor backup for the occasional wet day.

Spring and autumn are the most requested seasons, so central hotels move early and rates tend to firm up. Summer brings long days but also school holidays and heavier crowds around the main sights. Winter is quieter outside the festive stretch, with Christmas lights in the centre and some of the calmest weeks early in the year.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
