South Bank

The river, big galleries and a city that works with children.

The South Bank is London's easiest family base and a surprisingly good adult one too. The river path connects the London Eye, Tate Modern, the Globe and Borough Market; the National Theatre and Southbank Centre put culture at the door. Hotels are often less expensive than equivalent central ones, and you can cross the river on foot. The downside is chain restaurants, crowds and a slightly staged version of the city.

What works

  • River walks and world-class galleries
  • A short walk to the West End via the bridge
  • The most child-friendly central base

What doesn’t

  • Tourist-heavy on sunny weekends
  • Fewer independent restaurants at the door
  • Some hotels feel like conference venues

One local move

Book a higher floor; river-view rooms are worth it only if you are actually in the room at sunset. For food, walk ten minutes inland to Lower Marsh rather than eating on the riverside strip.

Getting around

Waterloo is the main hub, with Southwark, Blackfriars and London Bridge nearby. Trains from Waterloo East connect to the City; the river path is the real transport here. From Heathrow, the Piccadilly line to Green Park then Jubilee works well.

Safety

Safe and heavily policed around major venues. Keep bags zipped in Borough Market and watch for pickpockets in theatre crowds.

The shortlist

4 picks in South Bank

One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.

Luxury$700–$1,000

Shangri-La The Shard

London from above, with the pool and views that justify the splurge. Ask for a room facing the river, not the city.

Mid-range$250–$400

Park Plaza County Hall

Big, practical and closer to family attractions than most; not stylish, but the location is excellent.

Budget$130–$220

Premier Inn London Southwark

Reliable beds and blackout curtains near Tate Modern. The value play for a family that needs two rooms.

Unique$350–$550

Sea Containers London

Curvy, river-facing and a little theatrical, with a strong bar and a good spa. The atmosphere is the point.

Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Borough Market

    Market

Go on a weekday morning, share as you walk and avoid the sit-down stalls at noon.

  2. Padella

    Pasta

Worth the queue for the pici cacio e pepe. The best tactic is early lunch or very late lunch.

  3. Founders Arms

    Pub

A straightforward Thames-side pub for a pint and a view. Food is secondary; the river is the point.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
