Soho

Theatre lights, small plates and a night that keeps going.

Soho is the most efficient first-time London base. The West End is on your doorstep, Chinatown is around the corner, and you can walk to Covent Garden, Mayfair and the river without touching a ticket machine. It is also loud, crowded and expensive, with rooms that are often smaller than the photos. Accept those terms and you are buying one of the most useful locations in Europe.

First tripNightlifeFoodBest transit

What works

  • Walk to the West End, Covent Garden and Mayfair
  • Food and drink at every hour
  • Excellent transport and night buses

What doesn’t

  • Noise until the small hours
  • Small rooms and high rates
  • Refuse bags, crowds and theatre traffic

One local move

Ask for a room at the back, above the first floor, and pack earplugs anyway. For a calmer evening, walk ten minutes to Fitzrovia rather than staying on the main Soho strip.

Getting around

Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus, Leicester Square and Tottenham Court Road are all within ten minutes. The Elizabeth line at Tottenham Court Road is the quietest way to Heathrow. Most of your walking will happen before you need a train.

Safety

Busy and well-lit, but pickpockets work the crowds after theatre shows and in the smaller bar streets. Watch for off-licence scams and people offering ‘entrance’ to clubs.

The shortlist

4 picks in Soho

One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.

Luxury$550–$900

Ham Yard Hotel

Firmdale at its most playful: a courtyard, a bowling alley and rooms that feel designed rather than branded.

Mid-range$250–$400

The Nadler Soho

Compact, useful rooms with kitchenettes in the middle of Soho. Not romantic; very sensible.

Budget$150–$250

The Z Hotel Soho

Tiny, windowless-in-some-rooms budget beds where the location is the entire point. Fine for two nights.

Unique$400–$650

Dean Street Townhouse

A townhouse of idiosyncratic rooms above a proper restaurant; the atmosphere is the upgrade.

Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Bar Italia

    Italian café

Open late, properly Italian and stubbornly unchanged. Order a coffee and watch Soho pass.

  2. Bao Soho

    Taiwanese

Small, queue-prone and worth it for the pork bao. Go early or late, not at 19:30.

  3. Hoppers Soho

    Sri Lankan

Egg hoppers and rich curries in a warm room. Reserve ahead; walk-ins are possible at lunch.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
