Old Dubai & the Creek
Spice sacks, wooden abras and the city before the glass.
Old Dubai around Al Fahidi, Al Seef and Deira is the most human part of the city: wind-tower houses, the spice and gold souks, the creek and the abra boats that cross it for a dirham or two. Hotels are cheaper, restaurants are more interesting and the pace is slower. It is also hotter, older and less polished, with fewer beach options. If you want to understand Dubai rather than just be impressed by it, spend at least a night here.
What works
- Souks, creek and abras at the door
- Much better food value
- Real history and atmosphere
What doesn’t
- No beach nearby
- Hot, busy market streets
- Fewer luxury facilities
One local move
Cross the creek by abra rather than taxi, and do the gold and spice souks in the morning before the heat and the tour groups. Eat at the Pakistani and Indian cafés in Deira for the best value in the city.
Getting around
Al Fahidi and BurJuman metro stations serve the area; the abra from Al Fahidi souk to Deira is the classic crossing. The creek is also the easiest way to see both banks without sitting in traffic.
Safety
Very safe. Expect aggressive selling in the gold and spice souks and higher prices for obvious tourists; bargain politely and walk away if the price is not right. Keep bags closed in the dense lanes.
