Downtown Dubai

The tallest tower, dancing fountains and malls that swallow an afternoon.

Downtown Dubai is built around the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall and the fountains — the icons most visitors come for. Staying here means you can see the skyline at night without a taxi ride, and the metro connects to the rest of the city. It is spectacular but not a neighbourhood in the traditional sense: wide roads, large blocks and air-conditioned malls. Choose it for the sights, not for street life.

What works

  • The main icons within walking distance
  • Metro and taxi access to everywhere
  • Huge choice of hotels and restaurants

What doesn’t

  • Not a real neighbourhood feel
  • Long hot walks between buildings
  • Mall-centric dining

One local move

See the fountains on a weekday evening rather than a weekend, and book Burj Khalifa tickets online for a specific time slot. For a cheaper meal, use the mall's food court or walk to the older streets of Business Bay rather than eating on the fountain frontage.

Getting around

The Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall metro station connects to the mall by an air-conditioned walkway. Distances between the tower, the fountains and the mall are longer than they look; use the walkways and don't plan across the district in the heat.

Safety

Very safe. The main issues are heat and crowds around the fountains at night. Keep children close in the mall and at the fountain show, and drink water during the walk between buildings.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
