Where to stay in the United Arab Emirates

Desert and skyline, with a very high level of service.

The UAE is easier to visit than many people expect and harder to understand than a weekend allows. Dubai is the obvious base, with the most hotels, restaurants and flights, but Abu Dhabi and the smaller emirates reward another day. Expect strong air conditioning, wide roads and a car-first layout outside the old quarters. Summer heat is intense, so plan indoor activities or an early start.

01

Dress for the place

Beachwear belongs on the beach and at hotel pools; malls and public buildings expect shoulders and knees covered. The rules are more relaxed than in some neighbours but still worth respecting.

02

Plan around the heat

From June to September, daytime temperatures are extreme. Do outdoor sights early in the morning, use air-conditioned transport and malls in the afternoon, and save the desert for the evening.

03

Check alcohol and public behaviour rules

Alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants, but public drinking and drunken behaviour are treated seriously. Check current rules before planning a night out.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
