Myeongdong & Euljiro

Cosmetics shops, street food and a subway station on every corner.

Myeongdong is Seoul's most tourist-friendly district: a dense grid of shops, street food stalls, cafés and hotels between the old centre and Namsan. It is the easiest base for a first visit, with two subway lines, walking distance to the Myeongdong and Gwangjang markets, and short rides to the palaces. It is also busy and commercial, with prices to match. For a calmer evening, walk east to Euljiro's beer alleys or north toward Cheonggyecheon.

What works

  • Two subway lines and easy taxis
  • Street food and shopping at the door
  • Walkable to markets and the old centre

What doesn’t

  • Crowded and commercial
  • Hotel rates climb with demand
  • Few quiet residential streets

One local move

Eat street food for lunch, but have dinner in Euljiro's alleys or at a market rather than on the main Myeongdong strip. The Namsan cable car and walking trail are close enough for an early-evening trip without a long commute.

Getting around

Myeongdong station (line 4) and Euljiro 1-ga (line 2) are the main stops; the airport bus stops nearby. Walking to Gwangjang Market takes about 20 minutes, and the palaces are 10–15 minutes by subway.

Safety

Very safe. Watch for scooters on the pedestrian streets and keep an eye on bags in the densest shopping crowds. The area is well lit and busy late into the evening.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Myeongdong Kyoja

    Kalguksu

A long-running noodle shop for hand-cut noodles and dumplings; the menu is short, the queue is real, and it is worth it.

  2. Baekjeong Myeongdong

    Korean barbecue

A busy barbecue restaurant for pork belly and beef; expect smoke, noise and a wait at peak hours.

  3. Euljiro Nogari Alley

    Late-night pub alley

A cluster of small bars serving dried fish, beer and soju; go late, keep it simple and enjoy the atmosphere. Specific shops change, so follow the crowds.

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
