Gangnam

Wide avenues, good restaurants and the modern face of Seoul.

Gangnam is the river-south business and shopping district: wide boulevards, department stores, excellent restaurants and hotels built for comfort rather than charm. Rooms are often larger than in the old centre, and the pace is calmer at night. The trade-off is distance: the palaces and markets are 30–40 minutes away by subway, which adds up over several days. It suits repeat visitors, business travellers and anyone who values space and restaurants over sightseeing convenience.

What works

  • Larger rooms and quieter streets
  • Excellent restaurants and cafés
  • Good subway and taxi access

What doesn’t

  • 30–40 minutes to the old centre
  • Fewer historic sights nearby
  • Commercial, corporate atmosphere

One local move

Use Gangnam as a comfortable base and batch your sightseeing into full days in the old centre rather than commuting back and forth. For food, explore the side streets of Sinsa and Apgujeong rather than the main road chains.

Getting around

Gangnam station (line 2) and Sinsa (line 3) are the main hubs; buses run along the wide avenues. The airport bus from Incheon stops at major Gangnam hotels.

Safety

Very safe, with heavy traffic and late-night drinking crowds on weekends. Use marked crossings, and take a taxi if you are out after the subway closes.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
