Bukchon & Insadong

Hanok roofs, tea houses and palace walls at the end of the lane.

Bukchon and Insadong sit between Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung in the old northern part of the city. This is where Seoul's traditional houses, teahouses and galleries are concentrated, and it is the most atmospheric place to stay if you value mornings without traffic. The lanes are steep and narrow, some are residential, and evenings are quiet. It is not the place for late-night shopping or quick airport access.

CouplesHistoricCultureQuiet nights

What works

  • Palaces and hanok lanes on foot
  • Quiet mornings and traditional tea houses
  • A strong sense of old Seoul

What doesn’t

  • Fewer subway stations nearby
  • Quiet at night, with limited dining
  • Crowds in Bukchon during the day

One local move

See Bukchon before 9am, when the lanes are empty and the light is good. Respect the signs asking for quiet — these are people's homes. For dinner, walk toward Anguk or Jongno rather than expecting a restaurant on every corner.

Getting around

Anguk station (line 3) is the main access point for Insadong and Bukchon; Gwanghwamun station serves the west side and the palaces. Buses fill the gaps, and taxis are cheap for short hops.

Safety

Very safe. The lanes are steep and can be slippery in winter; they are also residential, so keep voices down early and late. Watch for cars on the narrow shared streets.
