August in Paris

Le Marais is the easiest first-timer base: central, walkable and alive late. Saint-Germain is the classic left-bank romance, at a price. Montmartre trades convenience for village charm and lower rates. Canal Saint-Martin is for people who want a local, food-led Paris rather than a postcard one.

The season

Summer

Summer brings long days, outdoor dinners and a lot of people; the main sights are busiest and heat can make midday walking uncomfortable. Many Parisians leave on holiday, so some neighbourhood restaurants close for part of the season. Book rooms and popular museums ahead, and use the early morning and evening for the long walks.

Spring and early autumn are the most requested times, and hotel rates tend to follow: book early if those are your dates. Summer brings long days, crowds and heat, so plan museums and indoor stops for the hottest hours. Winter is quieter and colder, with fewer visitors but year-end lights that keep the centre busy.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
