Bastille & Oberkampf

Bars, market mornings and a livelier east side.

Bastille and Oberkampf are where a lot of Parisians go out: packed bars, small concert rooms, natural wine and food that does not need a famous address. Mornings belong to the Marché d'Aligre, afternoons to coffee and the canal, and evenings to the stretch between the two métro stops. The value is better than the centre and the mood is local, but weekends are loud, the big sights are elsewhere, and some streets feel scrappier late at night.

NightlifeFoodMarketsBudget

What works

  • Serious nightlife and food without the central markup
  • Marché d'Aligre and a strong everyday market scene
  • Walkable to the Marais, the canal and Gare de Lyon

What doesn’t

  • Weekend noise, especially around Bastille and Oberkampf
  • Few headline sights at the door
  • Some streets feel scruffier late at night

One local move

Book a hotel on a side street between Bastille and Oberkampf, not on rue de la Roquette or the place itself, and ask for a room away from the street on weekends. Shop the Marché d'Aligre on a weekday morning if you can.

Getting around

Bastille (lines 1, 5 and 8), Oberkampf (5 and 9), Bréguet–Sabin (5) and Ledru-Rollin (8) cover the area. Gare de Lyon is walkable for trains south, and the Canal Saint-Martin is 10–15 minutes north on foot. Bastille is a crowded interchange on weekend evenings.

Safety

Generally safe and lively at night. Watch phones and bags in the Bastille crowds and outside packed bars, and stay alert on quieter stretches toward the edge of the city after closing.

The shortlist

4 picks in Bastille & Oberkampf

One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.

Luxury$380–$600

Maison Bréguet

A calm five-star near Bastille with a courtyard, a small spa and rooms that feel more like a private house than a hotel. It is the polished end of the neighbourhood.

Nearest station
Bréguet–Sabin metro (line 5) · 3 min walk
Mid-range$190–$320

Le Petit Beaumarchais Hotel & Spa

A modern boutique on Boulevard Beaumarchais, with a small spa and Bastille at the door. Better for couples or friends than for an early night.

Nearest station
Bastille metro (lines 1, 5, 8) · 3 min walk
Budget$45–$110

Bastille Hostel

A simple hostel a few streets from the place de la Bastille. The price is the point; bring earplugs for the weekend.

Nearest station
Ledru-Rollin metro (line 8) · 4 min walk
Unique$200–$340

Hôtel L'Antoine

A Christian Lacroix-designed hotel on the site of a former convent on rue de Charonne: theatrical, patterned rooms and a location between Bastille and the Marais. Rooms tend to be small, but it has far more character than most.

Nearest station
Ledru-Rollin metro (line 8) · 3 min walk

Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Bofinger

    Alsatian brasserie

The grand old Alsatian brasserie near Bastille: choucroute, a tiled room and a busy crowd. Book ahead or try your luck at the bar.

  2. Chez Paul

    Bistro

A cramped, old-school bistro on rue de Charonne: steak-frites, a chalkboard and tables close together. Book, and do not come for a quiet dinner.

  3. Le Baron Rouge

    Wine bar

A standing-room wine bar near the Marché d'Aligre, with boards of cheese and charcuterie and glasses poured at the counter. It gets loud, in the best way.
