Where to stay in Mexico

Markets, colour and a food culture with deep regional roots.

Mexico is far larger and more varied than a beach trip suggests. Mexico City alone can absorb a week, with museums, markets and neighbourhoods that reward slow exploration, and the food changes by region. Buses and domestic flights connect the country, but pick fewer places than you think. Altitude, heat and safety vary by destination, so read up on the specific place rather than the whole country.

The country-level things that change the stay.

01

Take the altitude seriously

Mexico City sits above 2,200 metres. The first day can be tiring and breathless; take it slowly, drink water and avoid heavy meals and alcohol on arrival.

02

Use apps for transport

Ride-hailing apps are widely used and safer than hailing unknown taxis on the street. In Mexico City, the metro is cheap and fast but crowded at peak times.

03

Carry small notes

Markets, street food and small shops often prefer cash, and change for large notes can be difficult. Keep a mix of small notes and use cards in established businesses.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
