Where to stay in Canada

Big, orderly cities where the neighbourhood matters more than downtown.

Canada is enormous, and a first trip should not try to cross it. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver each deserve several days, and the spaces between them are the point of a longer journey. Cities are safe and walkable, with good transit in the centre and car-dependent edges. Winter is a real season, not an inconvenience: pack for it or travel in the shoulder months.

01

Add tax and tip

Displayed prices usually exclude sales tax, which varies by province, and tipping at restaurants and bars is expected. Check the total and whether service is included.

02

Pack for the season you are in

Winter needs a real coat, boots and layers; summer can be hot and humid in Toronto but cool on the coasts. Check the forecast for the specific city, not the whole country.

03

Use the airport train where it exists

Toronto's UP Express and Vancouver's SkyTrain are usually faster and cheaper than taxis. In Montreal, the airport bus or a fixed-price taxi is the practical choice.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
