Kyoto Station
Shinkansen above, ramen below, temples a bus ride away.
The area around Kyoto Station is about movement: the Shinkansen, the airport express, buses to every major sight and a huge complex of hotels, restaurants and shops under one roof. It is the most practical base for a short stay, a late arrival or a day trip to Nara and Osaka, and rooms are often larger for the money. It is not atmospheric, and most temples require a bus ride, but the transport advantage is real.
What works
- Shinkansen, airport express and buses
- Larger rooms for the price
- Easy day trips to Nara and Osaka
What doesn’t
- Little traditional atmosphere
- Most sights need a bus ride
- Station area is busy and commercial
One local move
Use the station as a base only if your itinerary is rail-heavy. For early temple starts, the first buses leave around 6–7am; check the stand number the night before so you are not lost in the crowds.
Getting around
Kyoto Station is the hub for JR lines, the subway, the airport express and city buses. Buses to Higashiyama and Kinkaku-ji leave from the station forecourt; the subway is faster for some routes.
Safety
Safe and well organised. The station is vast — allow extra time to find the right bus stand. Watch for cyclists in the surrounding streets and keep luggage close on crowded buses.
