Downtown & Kawaramachi
Nishiki Market, department stores and a city that stays up later.
Downtown Kyoto around Shijo-Kawaramachi is the functional heart: Nishiki Market, department stores, coffee shops, izakayas and two subway lines. It is the best base if you want a normal dinner after a day of temples, easy shopping and a bed without a luxury bill. It is not picturesque in the same way as Higashiyama, and the main streets are busy, but the side lanes have plenty of character. You can walk to Gion in 10–15 minutes.
What works
- Restaurants and markets at the door
- Subway and buses for the sights
- Walkable to Gion and the river
What doesn’t
- Busy, commercial streets
- Less traditional atmosphere
- Hotels fill quickly in peak season
One local move
Shop Nishiki Market earlier in the day and eat there standing up, then have dinner in the side lanes toward Pontocho or Kiyamachi. Avoid the riverside restaurants with photo menus; walk one street back for better prices.
Getting around
Kawaramachi and Karasuma subway stations, plus many bus routes. The Hankyu line at Kawaramachi connects to Osaka, and Gion-Shijo is one stop away on the Keihan line.
Safety
Very safe. Watch for bicycles and taxis on the narrow shopping streets, and keep belongings secure in the Nishiki Market crowds on weekends.
