Gion & Higashiyama
Wooden lanes, temple bells and the best early-morning light.
Gion and Higashiyama are the Kyoto of the imagination: narrow lanes, wooden machiya, the Yasaka Shrine and the walk up to Kiyomizu-dera. Staying here means you can be at the temple gates before the tour groups and wander the lanes in the evening after they leave. It is expensive, the streets are dark and quiet at night, and restaurants fill up early. Choose it for atmosphere and early starts, not for convenience or value.
What works
- Temples and the best lanes on foot
- Quiet evenings once the day trippers leave
- Beautiful early mornings
What doesn’t
- Expensive and limited budget rooms
- Few late-night dining options
- Steep, crowded lanes by midday
One local move
Start at Kiyomizu-dera or Kennin-ji at opening, then walk downhill through the lanes rather than climbing in the heat. Eat dinner early — many kitchens in this area close by 8pm or 9pm.
Getting around
Buses from Kyoto Station take 15–25 minutes; the Keihan line at Gion-Shijo helps for Fushimi Inari and Osaka. Most of Higashiyama is walkable but hilly, and taxis are the fallback in the heat.
Safety
Safe, with narrow lanes shared by pedestrians, cyclists and the occasional taxi. Do not chase geiko or maiko for photos; some lanes are private and marked. Watch your step on stone stairs after rain.
