Tsim Sha Tsui

The skyline across the water and the Star Ferry at your feet.

Tsim Sha Tsui is the tip of Kowloon: the harbour front, the museums, the Star Ferry and the best skyline view in Hong Kong. It is a practical base for a first visit, with a wide range of hotels from the Peninsula to clean, cheap guesthouses, and the MTR connects quickly to Central and the airport line. The streets behind the waterfront are busy and commercial rather than charming, and the cheapest rooms can be very small.

What works

  • The classic harbour skyline view
  • Star Ferry and multiple MTR lines
  • Hotels at every price point

What doesn’t

  • Crowded and commercial streets
  • Budget rooms can be tiny
  • Touts around the electronics and tailor shops

One local move

See the skyline from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade at dusk and take the Star Ferry to Central rather than the MTR — it costs little and is the best short trip in the city. For food, move away from Nathan Road toward Jordan or the side streets.

Getting around

Tsim Sha Tsui MTR connects the Tsuen Wan line and West Rail; the Star Ferry crosses to Central and Wan Chai. Walking to the waterfront museums is easy, but the district is larger than it looks.

Safety

Safe, with pickpockets in the very dense shopping crowds and pressure selling around Nathan Road. Walk past unsolicited tailor and electronics offers, and keep your bag zipped.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
