Central & Sheung Wan
Stone-slab lanes, finance towers and the best coffee in the city.
Central and Sheung Wan are Hong Kong at its most layered: colonial buildings, wet markets, contemporary galleries and a dense restaurant scene, all on steep streets connected by escalators and MTR stations. Stay here if you want to walk to dinner, reach the airport quickly and feel the city's pace. Rooms are small and prices high, and the hills are real. Sheung Wan is the calmer, more local end; Central is the polished one.
What works
- Walkable lanes full of food and bars
- Airport Express and multiple MTR lines
- Heritage streets and the Mid-Levels escalator
What doesn’t
- Expensive and small rooms
- Steep streets in every direction
- Noisy on the bar streets at night
One local move
Take the Mid-Levels escalator up and walk down through the side streets rather than climbing. For cheap eats, look in Sheung Wan around Wellington Street and the dried-seafood lanes; for coffee, the small roasters between Central and Sheung Wan.
Getting around
Central MTR connects the island line, Tsuen Wan line, Airport Express and Star Ferry. The Mid-Levels escalator helps uphill; taxis are cheap enough for short hops when it rains.
Safety
Very safe, with slippery pavements in the rain and aggressive traffic on narrow streets. Use pedestrian crossings and watch for taxis and delivery trucks when stepping off the curb.
