Causeway Bay & Tin Hau

Shopping crowds, street food and a calmer east end.

Causeway Bay is Hong Kong at full commercial volume: malls, Japanese department stores, street food and neon. It is convenient for shopping and eating, with the island line running through it and a huge range of mid-range hotels. Tin Hau and the streets toward North Point are quieter and more local, and still only one or two MTR stops away. Choose Causeway Bay for convenience, or the Tin Hau end for sleep.

What works

  • Shopping and street food within minutes
  • Island line and easy taxis
  • More mid-range rooms than Central

What doesn’t

  • Very crowded on weekends
  • Some streets are purely commercial
  • Rooms are still small for the price

One local move

Book a room on the Tin Hau side if you care about sleep, then walk west for the shopping. For a cheap, local meal, skip the mall restaurants and look for noodle shops and cha chaan tengs on the side streets between Causeway Bay and North Point.

Getting around

Causeway Bay and Tin Hau give you the island line; trams run the length of the north shore and are slow but useful for short hops. Wan Chai and Central are 5–10 minutes by train.

Safety

Safe, with dense crowds around the malls and pedestrian crossings. Typhoon warnings mean staying indoors and away from the waterfront; follow the signals rather than guessing.
