Oltrarno
Artisans, quiet piazzas and the city viewed from the other side of the river.
The Oltrarno is Florence across the Arno, a district of artisans' workshops, Renaissance palaces and student life rather than a museum circuit. Piazza Santo Spirito is the evening living room, the Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens anchor the western edge, and the streets toward San Frediano hold small trattorias and bars that locals actually use. It is romantic without being precious, and quieter at night than the north bank. The trade is distance: the Duomo and Uffizi are a 20–25 minute walk via a bridge, and some streets are dark and residential.
What works
- Pitti Palace, Boboli and Santo Spirito on foot
- Quieter evenings and a real local scene
- Artisan workshops and independent shops
What doesn’t
- A 20–25 minute walk to the Duomo and Uffizi
- Some streets are dark at night
- Fewer hotels and restaurants than the north bank
One local move
Spend an evening on Piazza Santo Spirito rather than crossing back to the north bank. Have an aperitivo at a bar on the square, then eat at a small trattoria in the side streets. In the morning, walk up to the Belvedere for the view before the heat builds.
Getting around
Cross the Arno on the Ponte Vecchio, Ponte Santa Trinita or Ponte alla Carraia; the walk from Santo Spirito to the Duomo is about 20–25 minutes. Buses run along the southern edge and to the station, and taxis can reach most streets. The tram does not enter this district.
Safety
Calm and safe on the main squares at night, with a student and local crowd around Santo Spirito. Dark residential streets near San Frediano are usually fine but disorienting; keep to lit routes and use a taxi if you are far from the centre.
