Duomo & Centro Storico
Marble, museum queues and the city at its most theatrical.
The historic centre is a UNESCO-listed maze of medieval streets wrapped around Brunelleschi's dome. Within ten minutes you have the Uffizi, the Accademia, the Signoria and, across the Ponte Vecchio, the Oltrarno. It is the obvious base for a short first trip, and the only place where you can step out of the hotel at 7am and have the baptistery to yourself. The downsides are intense crowds, restaurants that rely on foot traffic and rooms that are often small for the price. Pay for the location, then escape it in the evenings.
What works
- Everything on a first-trip itinerary is walkable
- Early mornings and late evenings are magically quiet
- The widest choice of hotels and restaurants
What doesn’t
- Extremely crowded in the middle of the day
- Many poor-value restaurants near the main sights
- Small rooms and high prices
One local move
Book the dome climb for the first slot and the Uffizi for late afternoon, then use the middle of the day for a long lunch and a siesta. The city is at its best when you stop fighting the crowd and let it pass.
Getting around
The centre is pedestrian and best walked. Santa Maria Novella station is a 10–12 minute walk to the Duomo; the T2 tram from the airport terminates there. Most buses run outside the pedestrian core, and taxis can drop at its edges but not inside.
Safety
Very busy and safe in the daytime, but pickpockets work the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio and Signoria. Keep bags zipped in crowds, do not leave phones on café tables and walk on lit streets after dark; the area between the Duomo and the station is busier and better lit than the side alleys.
4 picks in Duomo & Centro Storico
One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.
Hotel Savoy
A polished Rocco Forte hotel on Piazza della Repubblica, with a terrace and a central location that puts everything on foot. It is unapologetically expensive, with the service and breakfast to justify part of it.
Hotel Spadai
A modern four-star a few steps from the Duomo, with comfortable rooms and a good breakfast. It is rare value for this location; ask for a higher floor away from the street.
Hotel Pendini
An old-fashioned hotel above a café on Via degli Strozzi, with high ceilings and simple rooms. No lift and not luxurious, but genuinely central and cheaper than almost anything comparable.
Hotel Continentale
A Lungarno Collection boutique hotel by the Ponte Vecchio, with white, minimalist rooms and a rooftop bar looking at the river. The views and design are the draw; some rooms are small.
Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.

Mercato Centrale
Food market & stalls
The upstairs food hall of the San Lorenzo market, with pizza, pasta, lampredotto and coffee under one roof. It is convenient and busy, better for a casual lunch than a special dinner.
Trattoria Sostanza
Tuscan classics
A tiny, old-school trattoria known for butter chicken, bistecca and artichoke tortino. Book ahead, share tables and do not expect a vegetarian-friendly menu; it is a Florentine institution.
Caffè Gilli
Historic café
A historic café on Via Roma with marble, mirrors and a terrace on Piazza della Repubblica. It is a pleasant splurge for coffee or an aperitivo; sit outside at the right hour and watch the square.
