December in Beijing
Wangfujing and Dongcheng are the classic first base: the Forbidden City, Tiananmen and the main museums are walkable, and the subway is close. Gulou and Shichahai put you in the hutongs, with lakes, courtyard hotels and a slower rhythm, ten minutes north of the imperial axis. Sanlitun and Guomao are the modern east side, best for nightlife, restaurants and business, at the cost of distance from the old city.
