Wangfujing & Dongcheng
The imperial axis, department stores and the classic first-trip Beijing.
This is the Beijing of the postcards: Tiananmen, the Forbidden City, Jingshan Park and, a little east, the shopping street of Wangfujing. It is the most convenient base for a first visit, with the Forbidden City entrance and the main museums within walking distance and excellent subway connections. The area is heavily tourist-oriented, with predictable restaurants and souvenir shops, and the Old Beijing character survives more in the side hutongs than on the main avenue. Stay here for access, not for a local neighbourhood.
What works
- Forbidden City, Tiananmen and Jingshan on foot
- Excellent subway access at Wangfujing and Dongsi
- Hotels for every budget, including international brands
What doesn’t
- Very touristy and crowded
- Many mediocre restaurants on the main street
- Few late-night local options
One local move
Enter the Forbidden City at opening time through the Meridian Gate, then climb Jingshan for the view back over the roofs. In the afternoon, walk east into the Dongsi hutongs rather than staying on Wangfujing; the old streets start within ten minutes.
Getting around
Wangfujing on line 1 and Dongsi on lines 5 and 6 are the main metro stations; Tiananmen East and West serve the square. Most sights inside the Second Ring are walkable or one or two stops away. Use the subway for anything farther; taxis are slow in traffic and restricted near Tiananmen.
Safety
Very safe and heavily policed. Security checks are common at subway stations and major sights. Beware of touts offering "official" tours or tea ceremonies near Wangfujing and Tiananmen; they are not official.
4 picks in Wangfujing & Dongcheng
One strong pick per tier. All prices are sample ranges, not live quotes.
Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing
A refined five-star above the Wangfujing shopping district, with a small garden and views over the Forbidden City rooftops. It is the most polished base for a classic first visit, and priced accordingly.
Novotel Beijing Peace
A practical international four-star near Wangfujing and the Dengshikou subway, with reliable rooms and breakfast. It is a functional city hotel rather than a boutique, but the location works well for the main sights.
Beijing 161 Wangfujing Hotel
A simple budget hotel in Lishi Hutong near Dongsi, a 10-minute walk from Wangfujing. Rooms are small and there is no lift; the price and location are the reasons to book.
The PuXuan Hotel and Spa
A contemporary luxury hotel with a strong art focus and a quiet atmosphere above the Wangfujing area. It is more design-conscious than the big international brands, with a spa and a good restaurant.
Nightly ranges are sample estimates in USD for a standard double room. They move with season, events and how early you book.
Eat & drink nearby
Siji Minfu Roast Duck
Peking duck
A popular roast duck restaurant with a branch near Dengshikou. It is far better value than the famous tourist-branded houses, with crisp skin and proper pancakes; book ahead for dinner.
Mr. Shi's Dumplings
Dumplings
A longstanding dumpling restaurant in Baochao Hutong, north of the Forbidden City. It is popular with visitors but still good, with many fillings and cheap beer; expect a short wait.
Zhang Mama
Sichuan
A small, spicy Sichuan restaurant in a hutong near the Drum Tower. The room is cramped and the menu is short; it is a good counterpoint to Beijing's heavier imperial cooking.
