Sanlitun & Guomao

Glass towers, embassy bars and the most international version of Beijing.

Sanlitun is Beijing's bar and shopping district, centred on Taikoo Li and the surrounding lanes, with embassies, international restaurants and a young crowd. Guomao, two metro stops south, is the CBD: China World, office towers, hotels built for business and the easiest taxi access in the city. Together they are the most comfortable base for travellers who value restaurants, nightlife and modern hotels over hutong atmosphere. The trade is that you are 20–30 minutes from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen by subway, and the area can feel generic and expensive.

What works

  • The best international food and bar scene
  • Modern hotels and reliable taxi access
  • Guomao metro and direct airport links

What doesn’t

  • 20–30 minutes from the old city by subway
  • Expensive and sometimes generic
  • Heavy traffic on the ring roads

One local move

Use Sanlitun for dinner and a drink, but sightsee from the old city. If you stay here, start early: the subway to Tiananmen East is quick before rush hour, and you can be at the Forbidden City gate before the tour groups.

Getting around

Guomao is the interchange of lines 1 and 10, with direct access to China World. Sanlitun is served by Tuanjiehu on line 10 and Dongzhimen on lines 2 and 13, each a 10-minute walk. DiDi is the default for evenings; traffic on the East Third Ring can be slow at any hour.

Safety

Very safe and busy late into the night. Watch for overpriced bars and the occasional bar scam in Sanlitun, count your change and use licensed taxis or DiDi after midnight.

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
