December in Bangkok
Sukhumvit is the most convenient all-rounder: hotels at every price, the BTS Skytrain, and food from street stalls to fine dining. Silom and the riverside suit couples and business travellers, with the river boats, a calmer evening and the city's grand old hotels. The Old City is where the temples are, best for early sightseeing and atmosphere, but hot, low-rise and less convenient at night.
Cool season
The cool season is the most comfortable and the most requested, and hotel rates tend to follow. Mornings and evenings can feel almost mild, while the midday sun still has bite. Book ahead for the popular weeks and keep a light layer for boats and air-conditioned trains.
November to February is the cool season and the most requested window, so book early for the best rooms. March to May is the hot season, when sightseeing is best early and late, with a real break at midday. June to October is the rainy season: heavy showers are common but usually pass, and the city is greener and quieter between them.
