Old City & Rattanakosin

Temple roofs, river heat and mornings that belong to locals.

The Old City, on Rattanakosin island, is where Bangkok's greatest temples and palaces are: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun across the river. Staying here is about being first at the gates in the morning and watching the neighbourhood wake up. The trade-offs are real: fewer hotels, hot low-rise streets, limited nightlife and a longer ride to the rest of the city. For a short, temple-focused stay, it is worth it.

What works

  • Temples and the river within a walk
  • Quiet, atmospheric evenings
  • Good value small hotels

What doesn’t

  • No Skytrain or metro nearby
  • Hot streets with little shade
  • Few restaurants open late

One local move

Start at Wat Pho or the Grand Palace at opening, then use the river boat to Wat Arun. For dinner, cross to the other bank or walk toward Wang Lang market rather than staying inside the palace area.

Getting around

The river boats from Tha Chang and Tha Tien are the main exit; taxis and buses handle the rest. The metro reaches Sanam Chai on the edge of the district, which has improved access a lot.

Safety

Safe, but be wary of tuk-tuk drivers near the Grand Palace saying the temple is closed — it is a sales route. Cross roads carefully, and carry water in the heat.

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.
