Sukhumvit

Skytrain stops, international food and hotels on every block.

Sukhumvit is Bangkok's most practical base for visitors: a long avenue of hotels, restaurants, malls and hospitals along the BTS Skytrain and metro. It has the widest range of accommodation, from hostels to five-stars, and food from street stalls to top-end restaurants. It is not the most beautiful part of the city, and the side streets can be chaotic, but everything works. Lower Sukhumvit is busier and more nightlife-oriented; upper Sukhumvit around Phrom Phong and Thonglor is calmer and better for families.

What works

  • BTS and metro within a short walk
  • The widest hotel and food range
  • Easy airport access from Phaya Thai

What doesn’t

  • Traffic and chaotic side streets
  • Not a beautiful district
  • Nightlife noise on lower Sukhumvit

One local move

Choose a hotel within five minutes of a BTS station, not just 'Sukhumvit'. For a calmer stay, look north of Soi 24; for food, follow the side streets around Phrom Phong and Thonglor rather than the main road chains.

Getting around

BTS stations run along the avenue, and the metro crosses it at Asok. The Airport Rail Link connects at Phaya Thai, and river boats are a taxi ride away; use the train to avoid the worst traffic.

Safety

Generally safe; the main issues are traffic, uneven pavements and late-night drink spiking or bar scams. Keep your phone off the road edge, ignore unsolicited tour offers and use metered taxis or ride-hailing.

Eat & drink nearby

  1. Supanniga Eating Room

    Thai

A comfortable Thai restaurant serving family recipes from the east; good for a first proper dinner, book ahead at weekends.

  2. Baan Ice

    Southern Thai

A busy southern Thai restaurant in Thonglor with sharp, spicy curries; not for timid palates, and worth the heat.

  3. Jeh O Chula

    Late-night noodles

A famous tom yum noodle shop near Chulalongkorn; the queue is long, the hours are late and the food is worth planning around.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
