April in Bangkok

Sukhumvit is the most convenient all-rounder: hotels at every price, the BTS Skytrain, and food from street stalls to fine dining. Silom and the riverside suit couples and business travellers, with the river boats, a calmer evening and the city's grand old hotels. The Old City is where the temples are, best for early sightseeing and atmosphere, but hot, low-rise and less convenient at night.

The season

Hot season

The hot season builds through these months, and midday is better spent indoors, in a pool or over a long lunch. Temples and markets are easier at opening time, and a hotel near a train station saves you from long walks in the sun. Carry water and avoid scheduling two outdoor sights back to back.

November to February is the cool season and the most requested window, so book early for the best rooms. March to May is the hot season, when sightseeing is best early and late, with a real break at midday. June to October is the rainy season: heavy showers are common but usually pass, and the city is greener and quieter between them.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
