Where to stay in South Africa

Mountains, oceans and cities with a complicated, generous heart.

South Africa rewards a longer trip than most first-timers plan. Cape Town and the Winelands are the obvious route, but the Garden Route, Johannesburg and the country's parks offer other reasons to come. The beauty sits beside deep inequality and real crime; a few sensible habits — not walking alone at night, not displaying valuables, using app-based transport — make a large difference.

01

Take normal city crime seriously

Do not walk alone at night, keep phones and jewellery out of sight, and use rideshare apps after dark. Withdraw cash inside a bank or mall, and avoid unlit areas around stations.

02

Check the power situation

Scheduled power cuts have affected South Africa in recent years. Check the current situation before you travel; most hotels and restaurants have backup power, but a torch and a charged power bank help.

03

Tip where it is expected

Tipping is standard for restaurant staff, car guards and people who help with luggage. A modest amount is part of the local economy, so keep small notes available.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”
