January in Tokyo

For a first trip, Shinjuku is the simplest machine: trains, food and neon until late. Asakusa buys you old Tokyo and lower rates. Ginza is the calm, polished choice; Ueno is the practical one for museums, kids and day trips.

The season

Winter

Winter is cooler and generally clear, and some districts feel noticeably quieter once the holidays wind down. Year-end illuminations keep the popular shopping areas bright and busy, so book those nights early. Many shops and museums close for a few days around New Year, so check before you plan those days.

Spring and autumn are the most requested seasons, and hotel rates tend to follow: book early if cherry blossoms or autumn colours are the plan. Summer is hot and humid, with school holidays and festival crowds making the city feel fuller. Winter is cooler and quieter in some districts, though year-end illuminations keep the popular areas busy.

One more opinion

Send me the trip. I’ll send back the area.

Dates, budget, who’s travelling and the one thing you don’t want to deal with. I’ll answer with a specific base, not a brochure.

A note from the editor

“I’d rather tell you which area to skip than sell you another list of ‘best hotels’.”

The guides are independent. Booking links may earn a commission; they never change the shortlist.
