Ginza
Tailored, well-lit and asleep by eleven.
Ginza is what people mean when they say Tokyo is a polished city. Department stores, galleries, excellent sushi counters and bars with no signage. It is also one of the easiest places to stay: Tokyo Station is a short walk or taxi away, the streets are flat, and the nights are quiet. The trade-off is obvious. You will pay for the calm, and you will not find much scruffy late-night energy.
What works
- Walkable, flat and close to Tokyo Station
- Exceptional food and cocktail bars
- Quieter nights than Shinjuku or Shibuya
What doesn’t
- Expensive rooms and breakfasts
- Department stores dominate the daytime
- Not much late-night energy
One local move
Sunday afternoons close Chuo-dori to cars. Stay one block east toward Tsukiji for better value, and walk the backstreets between Ginza and Shimbashi for the most interesting bars.
Getting around
Ginza, Marunouchi and Hibiya lines put the city within reach; Tokyo Station is a 10–15 minute walk for the Shinkansen and Narita Express. At night, a taxi to Haneda is often faster than the train.
Safety
One of the calmest central areas after dark. Keep the usual caution in bars that advertise too aggressively and in the late-night streets toward Shimbashi.
